Hunter Valley, NSW
Dark purple with dark violet hues.
Intense black fruits, spice and toasty notes dominate with some subtle licorice.
An excellent year in the Hunter Valley. Dry throughout the growing season, the vineyards burst early but a cool spring slowed the growth periods, meaning ripening was around 2-3 weeks later than usual. December saw warm weather with average rainfall allowing for healthy and clean canopies giving excellent ripening conditions. January and February saw significantly lower than average rainfall conditions which meant ripening was even and let the team have the ability to pick fruit at its optimum ripeness.
A rich and dense palate, with dark fruits to the fore. The palate is intense and long with lovely structure.
A tribute to Maurice O'Shea, this wine takes its name from his old ways of naming wines, by style rather than variety. Hand-picked and cold soaked for 5 days. A rigorous pumping over routine followed inoculation, with the wine pressed off at dryness. Transferred to 50% new French oak barriques for 12 months before blending.

Most often my least favourite wine in the range, though I’d bet it’s very popular with others. This is from the contours at the top of the estate vineyard. Showing a bit of oak, dark fruits, liquorice, spice. Full-bodied, it is, with deep fruit and grainy tannin to match, it’s pretty ripe, but not over the top, moving into light soy sauce flavour, almost. A lot of tannin and grip on the finish, and the length is really very good. Some raspberry and red things pop up on the finish. Thunder on the mountain here at present, but with time, should be a pretty impressive wine.
