About this Wine
Hunter Valley, NSW
Brilliant medium purple with violet hues.
Intense red fruits of raspberry and red currants integrate with the classical pinot notes of cherry and cranberry. Some lovely spice and and cedar characters are also found on this complex and classic Hunter Valley style.
An excellent year in the Hunter Valley. Dry throughout the growing season, the vineyards burst early but a cool spring slowed the growth periods, meaning ripening was around 2-3 weeks later than usual. December saw warm weather with average rainfall allowing for healthy and clean canopies giving excellent ripening conditions. January and February saw significantly lower than average rainfall conditions which meant ripening was even and let the team have the ability to pick fruit at its optimum ripeness.
A beautifully intense palate of red and dark fruits. The palate is rich and long, with the tannin from the Pinot combining with the elegance and grace of the Shiraz, providing this classic Hunter blend with complexity and depth of flavours.
All fruit was hand picked and crushed to tank for a short cold soak. The Shiraz was inoculated and pumped over 3 times daily while the Pinot Noir was allowed to naturally ferment without the addition of yeast with a twice daily punch down. Pressed to tank prior to dryness, the Shiraz was racked to tank for malolactic fermentation, while the Pinot went to wood. The total new oak percentage being less than 20%. After 12 months maturation, the Shiraz and Pinot were blended to suit the classic Hunter style.

The label, the Mount Henry name, and the blend, are all evocative of Maurice O'Shea – and so is the wine in the glass. O’Shea would have ‘light bodied’ in small caps on the front label, and despite that, his wines in this fashion lasted for decades. I’d like the oak in this wine to settle down, so leave it to its own devices for 5 or so years.
