Planted in 1880 by Charles King, the 'Old Hill' or 'O.H' vineyard has produced some of the Hunter Valley's greatest red wines. Legendary winemaker Maurice O'Shea first made wine from the 'Old Hill' in the 1920's & 1930's. These early wines are still regarded as some of the greatest Australian wines of all time.

About this Wine

Hunter Valley, NSW

Jim Chatto

Deep purple

Intense dark fruits coupled with lovely spice and red berries.

Growing Conditions

After the hot dry end to 2013, near perfect January weather has resulted in an outstanding vintage of intensity and wonderful balance. 2014 will be remembered as one of the Hunter Valley's greatest vintages.

Structural with powerful fruit, a long intense palate with seamless tannin.

Hand picked in three passes through the vineyard, only selecting the perfect bunches on each run. The fruit was destemmed & crushed into small open fermenters for a brief cold soaking period where intense colour was gained immediately. Fermented at 18-25˚C for approximately 9 days. Gently pressed to large format French oak barrels (~25% new) for almost 13 months maturation, before blending and bottling.

2016 Halliday Wine Companion

"Progressively hand-picked with three passes through the vineyard, picking only the perfect bunches, destemmed and crushed to open fermenters for a brief cold soak, fermentation for 7 days, matured in large-format French oak (30% new) for 18 months. From the oldest vines in the Block range, and the lightest colour; ultra classic Hunter Valley shiraz with savoury/earthy/spicy undertones to the medium-bodied blue and black fruits of the palate, contributing as much to the structure and texture of the wine as to the flavour."

The Real Review

"Full red/purple hue, lighter than most shiraz of its age. The aromas are fruit-driven, raspberry to red cherry-like and fresh, straightforward, clean, while the palate is medium-weight at best and has supple, graceful tannins and plenty of extract. A bold, youthful, elegant shiraz and very pleasant drinking now, but it should be cellared for several years to enjoy the full pay-off."
